The faction of the Labour Party under Julius Abure’s leadership has firmly rejected any prospect of forming a coalition in preparation for the 2027 general election, emphasizing its commitment to internal strengthening and strategic reorganization.
This stance was detailed in a communiqué issued after the party’s national executive council (NEC) meeting on May 2 at its national headquarters.
The communiqué, endorsed by the faction’s national chairman, Julius Abure, and national secretary, Farouk Ibrahim, declared categorically that the party “is not and will not be part of any coalition” ahead of the upcoming general elections. Instead, the faction vowed to concentrate on reinforcing its internal framework, expanding its membership base, and honing its political tactics to boost its prospects in the 2027 polls.
The NEC also upheld the legitimacy of the party’s national convention held on March 27, 2024, in Nnewi, stating that the event adhered to party protocols and was duly notified to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). The council approved the ad-hoc delegates list previously endorsed at an earlier NEC meeting in Asaba on March 20.
Praising the Supreme Court for upholding the autonomy of political parties in managing their internal affairs, the party noted that the court’s April 4 ruling validated the decisions of its recognized bodies. The NEC reaffirmed its complete support for the Abure-led national working committee, expressing trust in its capacity to steer the party toward electoral success.
The council also extended congratulations to George Moghalu for securing the party’s governorship candidacy for the forthcoming Anambra election and encouraged voters to back his campaign in the November 8 poll.
In a step toward enforcing party discipline, the NEC established a five-member panel to probe allegations of anti-party activities, including those involving Abia State Governor Alex Otti. The committee, led by Ayo Olorunfemi with Umar Farouk Ibrahim as secretary, comprises Kehinde Edun, Dudu Manuga, and Callistus Ihejiagwa. The panel has been granted two weeks to present its findings.
Governor Otti, speaking on Arise TV on Friday, May 2, rejected Abure’s leadership, stating, “When you go through the Supreme Court judgment, you will know that Abure is just masturb@ting. He is out.”
A Gentle Reminder: Every obstacle is a stepping stone, every morning; a chance to go again, and those little steps take you closer to your dream.
