A local government official stated that two people on board a privately owned aircraft from Zimbabwe that crashed into Lake Malawi on Tuesday have been found dead.
The district commissioner of Nkhotakota, Malawi, Ben Matengeni Tonho, said that two Dutch people and a Zimbabwean pilot were among the dead.
The plane, operated by Nyasa Express, a Zimbabwean firm, also carried a female Dutch passenger who was saved by nearby fishermen and is presently receiving medical attention in a hospital for minor wounds.
According to Matengeni, increased search and rescue efforts resulted in the discovery of the bodies and wreckage early on Wednesday morning.
“We mobilized the support of locals and fishermen. It’s through their efforts that we managed to retrieve the bodies and the wreckage. The bodies have since been taken to a district hospital,” he said.
The C2110 aircraft crashed 45 minutes before it was supposed to land. It had taken off from Nkhotakota and was headed to eastern Malawi.
This terrible event comes after another plane crash on June 10 that killed eight people, including Saulosi Klaus Chilima, the vice president of Malawi. There are still open investigations into both crashes.
