BOMB SCARE: Suspicious Vehicle’ Blown Up In Controlled Explosion

The Metropolitan Police have blown up a “suspicious vehicle” in a town centre in a controlled explosion. It is confirmed that roads near to the scene in West Croydon had been closed and buildings and nearby shops evacuated.

The Metropolitan Police confirmed that streets near the site of the incident in West Croydon have been closed and buildings and nearby shops have been evacuated.

Police said they learned of the car near West Croydon bus station around 3 p.m. this afternoon.

A spokesman said: “Police conducted a controlled detonation of the vehicle as a precaution.

“Siege and roads are being removed. West Croydon Bus and railway stations will also be reopened.”

Earlier, the police had tweeted that the incident was not believed to be related to terrorism. Images from the scene early this afternoon showed a stretch of cordon on one side of the road.

A spokesman for Croydon Met Police Services previously said: “At approximately 15:00 a siege has been placed near West Croydon Bus and Rail Station after officers became aware of a suspicious vehicle.

“Expert officers are involved in the assessment. Some buildings/shops have been evacuated as a precautionary measure.

“Roads are closed. Motorists should use alternate routes. Bus and train services have also been disrupted.”

Southern Rail tweeted: “Due to emergency services dealing with an incident in West Croydon, we are unable to call this station.”

In a follow-up tweet, the train service said: “The nature of this incident is now preventing any trains from operating in the area.”

Unconfirmed social media reports also stated that dog handlers and fire brigade were present at the scene. The remembrance comes days after the bombing of a taxi in Liverpool on Sunday.

A male passenger – named Imad Jameel al-Swelmeen – who detonated the bomb is the only person to die in the blast.
