The Edo State Commissioner for Information and Communication, Paul Ohonbamu, stated that the recent visit of Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, to the state resulted in a stampede that led to the de@th of three individuals.
Ohonbamu shared this information during an interview with Channels TV on July 21. However, he did not specify the location within the state where the alleged stampede took place.
Ohonbamu said:
‘’Yes, intelligent report brought it out, Two d!ed in the hospital. They rushed them actually. Let me tell you, many of these things, we do not alarm the public with some of these things. You know that anywhere Obi enters, there is this euphoria. People do not know him deeply, they just see him and then say ‘This is Obi, the messiah they want and they rush after him. That euphoria, the ecstasy can cause stampede but it did not reflect in votes’’
When questioned if the stampede occurred at the school of nursing that Obi visited in the state, the Commissioner responded:
‘’Apart from going to that school, he went to other places. He cannot just go to that school and go like that. ‘’
When asked about the date of the stampede, he stated it happened on July 7.
When pressed for the exact location of the stampede, he said:
‘’In Benin, they took some of them to the hospital. I did not folow Peter Obi to where he followed but I know that is where it happened. I was supposed to address the press on it but they said do not panic the public. Peter Obi knows all this.”
