Haitian Gang Releases 3 More Kidnapped Missionaries

3 more kidnapped missionaries by a Haitian gang known as 400 Mawozo have been released by their captors nearly two months after they were taken during a mission trip, according to a statement released on Monday by the Ohio-based Christian Aid Ministries.

“We are thankful to God that three more hostages were released last night,” Christian Aid Ministries said in a statement. “Those who were released are safe and seem to be in good spirits. As with the previous release, we are not able to provide the names of the people released, the circumstances of the release, or any other details.”

The missionaries were part of 17 who was kidnapped by the gang in October. Kidnappers had demanded a ransom of $1 million for each hostage.

According to the Associated Press, the kidnapping occurred while the group, which is comprised of Amish, Mennonite, and other conservative Anabaptists, traveled to an orphanage in Port-au-Prince.

The three hostages were released on Sunday in Haiti and “are safe and seem to be in good spirits,” according to a Dec. 6 update from Christian Aid Ministries; the U.S.-based religious organization behind the Oct. 16 mission trip to Haiti where 16 Americans and one Canadian were kidnapped.

A spokesperson for the U.S. Department of State; Ned Price, confirmed the release of the three hostages during a Monday, Dec. 6 press briefing. He said U.S. government officials continue to work with Haitian and Canadian government agencies to ensure the release of the remaining hostages.

Two other hostages were released by the Haitian gang in late November, while 12 missionaries remain in captivity. None of the released hostages have been identified by Christian Aid Ministries for safety reasons.

At least one of the three hostages released Sunday is from Hart, a rural town in Michigan’s Oceana County, Hart Dunkard Brethren Church Minister Ron Marks told WOOD-TV on Monday. A mother and four kids from Hart were among the 17 missionaries kidnapped during the trip.

Christian Aid Ministries said it will be praying and fasting for the remaining hostages.

“Please continue to intercede for those who are still being held as well as those who have been released,” the statement said. “We long for all the hostages to be reunited with their loved ones. Thank you for your prayer support.”
