Lecturer Arrested For Alleged Sexual Harassment In KWASU

Mr. Pelumi Adewale, a member of Kwara State University’s (KWASU) Malete’s academic staff, has been fired for alleged sexual harassment of Miss Tosin Adegunsoye, a student in the school’s Department of Pure and Applied Sciences.

Prof. Mustapha Akanbi, Vice-Chancellor of KWASU, announced at a press conference in Ilorin on Monday to commemorate the institution’s eighth and ninth convocation ceremonies.

Adewale had been fired from the school, according to Akanbi, for bringing the institution into shame.

The VC said, ”The security agency has taken up the case and it is in court already, but I am informing you officially that the man is now an ex-staff member of the institution.

”He is a disgrace to our great institution and we won’t condone such acts.”

According to the Nigerian News Agency (NAN), Adewale was arraigned before a magistrate court in Ilorin on Sept. 11 on charges of sexual harassment.

The State Intelligence Bureau (SIB) arrested the suspect on charges of criminal intimidation, sexual harassment, and examination malpractice.

According to the First Information Report, Adegunsoye claimed in a petition dated Oct. 15 that Adewale, a lecturer assigned to teach her MLS 212 Cell and Molecular Biology, called her sometime in September and threatened to fail her upcoming examination if she refused to have sexual intercourse with him.

The police instructed Adegunsoye to play along with the lecturer in order to acquire raw evidence in light of the threat that was later reported.

The lecturer then persuaded the student into his bedroom apartment on Taoheed Road, Basin Area, Ilorin, at 8:30 p.m., where he gave her a new question paper and KWASU response script and promised to have sexual intercourse with her until daybreak.

The culprit, however, was captured by investigators who were hiding in a secure place to keep an eye on the situation.

Presiding Magistrate Ibrahim Mohammed, in his ruling, complied with the defense’s request and gave the accused bail in the amount of N200,000.

He then deferred the case until December 8 for further consideration.
