Lions Attacked And Killed 30-Year-Old At A Game Reserve

Lions attacked and ate a 30-year-old guy at the Dinokeng Game Reserve in Gauteng, South Africa.

Johannes Matshe, an employee of one of the reserve’s landowners, was killed on Sunday night, August 13, 2023, and his remains were recovered on Monday morning, August 14, 2023.

Hartogh Streicher, the reserve’s spokesperson, confirmed the occurrence in a statement on Thursday, August 17.

“The individual was tragically attacked and killed by lions while attempting to navigate the reserve on foot after dark,” said Streicher.

“Walking within the DGR during the night, or at any time, is strictly forbidden in accordance with reserve regulations.”

He stated that the incident was discovered when the DGR’s alert reserve fencing crew discovered what seemed to be human remains at roughly 10.37 a.m. on Monday.

“The operations manager responded promptly, confirming the unfortunate loss of life,” he said.

According to Streicher, the SAPS was immediately contacted.

“An investigation is underway,”

Following the tragedy, Streicher stated that The Dinokeng Game Enterprises (DGE), a separate company chaired by Michael Daymond, have confirmed that they have applied to the Gauteng Department of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment (GDARDE) for a permit to euthanize the three lions.

Daymond expressed his sadness at the awful tragedy and gave his condolences to the family.

According to Streicher, due to safety requirements, no pedestrian movement is permitted within the reserve, and vehicle exit is limited to authorized sites only.

“This incident underscores the need for both visitors and landowners to exercise caution when interacting with the reserve’s wildlife. By respecting the rules and adopting responsible behaviour, we can ensure a safer environment for all,” concluded Streicher.

Today's Quote

“Here’s to the crazy ones. The misfits. The rebels. The troublemakers. The round pegs in the square holes. The ones who see things differently. They’re not fond of rules. And they have no respect for the status quo. You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them. About the only thing you can’t do is ignore them. Because they change things. They push the human race forward. And while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius. Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones who do.”
