Michael Jackson’s Dirty Sock Fetches Over $8,000 At French Auction

According to a French auctioneer, a single sparkly sock worn by the late music sensation Michael Jackson at a 1990s French concert brought in almost $8,000 on Wednesday.

Auctioneer Aurore Illy told AFP that a technician discovered the used sock thrown away next to Jackson’s dressing room following the July 1997 performance in the southern city of Nimes.

According to the specialized website interencheres.com, the self-described “King of Pop” donned white sports socks embellished with rhinestones during his 1997 “HIStory World Tour.” Videos of Jackson singing his popular song “Billie Jean” show him wearing them.

In an image uploaded to the website, decades later, the off-white garment is smeared with stains and the rhinestones that adorn it have turned yellow with time.

“It really is an exceptional object — even a cult one for Michael Jackson fans,” Illy said.

The sock, initially valued at €3,000 to €4,000 ($3,400 to $4,500), sold for €7,688 ($8,822) at the Nimes auction house.

A Macau gaming resort in 2009 paid $350,000 for a glittery glove Jackson wore when he performed his first “moonwalk” dance in 1983.

A hat he wore just before that performance sold for more than $80,000 in Paris in 2023.

Jackson died of a fatal overdose in 2009, aged 50.

Despite being accused of child molestation both during his lifetime and after his passing, which he and his estate have denied, he still maintains a sizable following.
