Michigan Schools Cancel Classes Due To Threats On Social Media

In the wake of a deadly school shooting at Oxford High School on Tuesday that killed four people, multiple school districts will be closed on Thursday as more violence was threatened via social media platforms.

Bloomfield Hills School District Superintendent Pat Watson wrote in a memo that was published on Wednesday at 11 pm that “Over the past hour, BHS and other communities across the region have received numerous reports of threats of violence circulating on social media. Out of an abundance of caution, all BHS schools will be closed on Thursday, December 2, 2021. All after-school activities are also canceled.”

He noted that the district is in touch with Bloomfield Township police over the rumors.

“The safety and security of our students is our top priority. We are in constant contact with Bloomfield Township Police who take every report or rumor seriously. We will follow up with you tomorrow with any updated information. Please take care of yourselves and one another,” he added.

Holly Area Schools also announced that their schools would remain closed “out of caution” on Thursday and Friday, “after multiple reports of a potential shooting threat against Holy Area schools that have been posted on social media,” said District Superintendent Scott. Roper and Holly Police Chief Jerry Narsh said in a joint statement.

A joint investigation was launched with the District and Holly Police Department, which produced “no sources for the original threat” and deemed the threat “not credible due to lack of evidence”.

Other schools closing on Thursday include: Bloomfield Hills School District, Holly Area Schools, Rochester Community Schools, Troy School District, Warren Consolidated Schools, Clarkston Community Schools, Lake Orion Community Schools, Walled Lake Consolidated Schools, Clawson Public Schools, Hazel Park Schools, Avondale School District, West Bloomfield School District,
Lamphere and Madison District Public Schools in Madison Heights, Novi Community School District.

Officials said in a post on the system that Oxford Community Schools, the Oakland County district where the shooting took place, will remain closed for the rest of the week.

“As we grapple with the horrific tragedy in our school community, we grieve the students who lost their lives and we express our grief for all those who have been injured and affected. We appreciate the support we have received from our community. Heartfelt appreciation to our state, and our nation,” the district said in a statement.

In addition to the deaths of four people, seven others, including a teacher, were seriously injured in Tuesday’s shooting at Oxford High School.

The suspect was identified on Wednesday as 15-year-old Ethan Crumbley. He was charged with four counts of first-degree murder as an adult, one count of terrorism by causing death, seven counts of assault with intent to murder, and 12 counts of possessing a firearm in the commission of a felony.

Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald said in a news conference on Wednesday that the shooting was planned and was “not merely an impulsive act.”

The investigation is still ongoing.
