Paralympics: Onyinyechi Mark Wins Nigeria’s First Gold Medal, Sets World Record

In the women’s 61kg powerlifting division, Nigeria’s Onyinyechi Mark broke the Paralympic record by lifting an incredible 145 kg.

This amazing achievement beats the previous record that was held by Lucy Ejike, a fellow countryman.

With one lift left, Mark’s performance has virtually guaranteed Nigeria’s first gold medal at the 2024 Paralympic Games in Paris. Mark intends to break her record with a last try of 147 kg, while her closest rival is attempting 138 kg.

With a long history of success in powerlifting and athletics, Team Nigeria is a legendary presence at the Paralympic Games. Nigeria won 10 medals at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics, including four gold ones. The team, which includes competitors like Lucy, has dominated the powerlifting scene.

Congratulations! We are so proud of you. More Wins!
