Parents Of Michigan School Shooting Suspect Pleads Not Guilty

The parents of the Michigan teen accused of opening fire on his high school earlier this week, pleaded not guilty to involuntary manslaughter charges Saturday morning, hours after police said they arrested them in a Detroit warehouse following an hours-long search.

Jennifer and James Crumbley appeared dazed and a bit disheveled when they were arrested. They were found inside a commercial building about 50 miles away from their Oxford, Michigan, home early Saturday, after a tip from the building’s owner, who saw their SUV there, the Detroit Free Press reported.

The couple dodged authorities for hours after they were expected to turn themselves in.

They are charged with involuntary manslaughter in connection with Tuesday’s attack, in which their 15-year-old son Ethan allegedly gunned down four students and injured seven others, including a teacher, with a weapon his parents purchased for him.

Their son was charged as an adult with four counts of first-degree murder and one count of terrorism causing death and is being held without bail.

A new video of the parents’ arrest aired by CNN shows them being led through a doorway into a hallway lined with armed US Marshals and other law enforcement. Both had their hands restrained behind their back.

Jennifer wearing a dark hoodie, kept her head down as she passed the camera. James wearing a blue and black flannel shirt, looked dazed as he shambled past.

Detroit Police Chief James White told reporters early Saturday the Crumbleys were “distressed” when they were found.

The couple dodged authorities for hours after they were expected to turn themselves in.

The detained couple, sitting alone in separate rooms, made their arraignment appearance by video conference with the judge, their attorneys, and the county prosecutor.

Both spoke little beyond saying they understood each charge and pleaded “not guilty” to each.
During the arraignment, their attorneys stressed their clients had fully intended to turn themselves in Saturday morning and denied prosecutors’ assertion that their son had unrestricted access to the gun he’s accused of using.

The shooting — the deadliest at a US K-12 campus since 2018 and the 32nd such attack since August 1 — claimed the lives of Madisyn Baldwin, 17; Tate Myre, 16; Hana St. Juliana, 14; and Justin Shilling, 17.

Today's Quote

“Here’s to the crazy ones. The misfits. The rebels. The troublemakers. The round pegs in the square holes. The ones who see things differently. They’re not fond of rules. And they have no respect for the status quo. You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them. About the only thing you can’t do is ignore them. Because they change things. They push the human race forward. And while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius. Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones who do.”
