PDP Says Buhari Is Responsible For The Division In The Country, Not Ortom

On Thursday, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) blamed President Muhammadu Buhari’s government, rather than Benue State Governor Samuel Ortom, for sowing division and animosity among Nigerians.

In a statement, Mallam Garba Shehu, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, blamed Ortom of inciting hatred by targeting an ethnic group in Nigeria – using language reminiscent of the Rwandan genocide – and added that the governor of a major state in Nigeria being politically motivated by ethnic hostility is a smear on the country.

Moreover, in a statement signed by Kola Ologbondiyan, the PDP’s National Publicity Secretary, the Buhari administration has been sowing seeds of discord in the country with hate speech, divisive inclinations, and unmasked nepotism that Nigerians have become widely divided along all fault lines, according to the statement.

Nigerians, he claims, have not forgotten President Buhari’s declaration, made ahead of the 2011 general elections, that “if what happened in 2011 should again happen in 2015, by the grace of God, the dog, and the baboon would all be soaked in blood”.

He described it as “alarming” that instead of addressing the killings in Benue State, as well as the country’s worsening insecurity, carnages, banditry, terrorism, and impending humanitarian crisis, the Buhari administration is recalling the Rwandan genocide while revealing its deep hatred for Governor Ortom.

“Governor Ortom is a highly principled and forthright leader, who is loved not only in Benue but also across the nation, ” according to the statement.

It encouraged Nigerians to hold President Buhari accountable if Governor Ortom or his family members were to suffer any harm.

“As a party, the PDP demands that the Buhari Presidency should come clean on its handling of insecurity in the country.

“This is particularly against the backdrop of its manifest failure to battle and rout out terrorists, bandits, kidnappers and marauders that have taken over our highways, forests, pillaging communities and killing Nigerians daily,”
the statement continued.
