United States President; Joe Biden over the past few months in office has avoided speaking directly about his predecessor but on the remembrance of January 6 Capitol attack, he delivered his most poignant remarks about the attack placing the onus entirely on former president; Donald Trump.

On January 6, 2021, a crowd of Trump supporters violently stormed the building in an attempt to prevent authentication of Biden’s election victory.

Biden accused his predecessor of spreading a “web of lies” about alleged fraud in the 2020 election because “he considers his own interest more important than the interest of his country.”

Throughout the speech, he referred to Trump as a “former president” instead of by his name.

“For the first time in our history, a president didn’t just lose an election. He tried to prevent a peaceful transfer of power as violent mobs flocked to the Capitol,” Biden said in a speech to the US Capitol. Minute. “But they failed. They failed. And on this day of remembrance, we must ensure that such an attack never happens again.”

“Trump’s bruised ego means more to him than our democracy or our Constitution,” Biden said. “He can’t accept that he lost.”

“He’s not just a former president,” Biden said. “He is a defeated former president, defeated by a margin of over 7 million votes.”

Biden presented his own presidency as a fight for democracy, calling on Americans to make January 6 “not the end of democracy but the beginning of a renaissance of freedom and fair play.”

Biden said that true patriotism is to accept defeat.

The President said, “You can’t love your country when you win. You can’t just follow the law when it’s convenient. You can’t be a patriot when you embrace and enable lies.”

Biden also called election laws passed by Republican-led state legislatures, which he said are an attempt to make it harder for people to vote.

“The former president and his supporters have decided to suppress your vote as the only way for them to win. This is to sabotage our elections. It’s wrong, it’s undemocratic. And frankly, it’s un-American.”

“Let us step up, write the next chapter in American history, because January 6th is not the end of democracy, but the beginning of a renaissance of freedom and fair play,” Biden said.

After his speech, Biden defended calling Trump outright as such when asked by a reporter whether he believed going after the former president “would be more divided than it would be okay.”

The president replied: “The way you have to heal, you have to recognize the extent of the wound. You can’t pretend. It’s a serious thing.”

“You have to face it. That’s what great nations do. They face the truth, deal with it and move on,” Biden said.
