Russian Emergencies Minister Dies In Arctic During Military Drills

The Russian government has lost one of its top officials. Emergency Situations Minister; Yevgeny Zinichev has died during strategic military drills in the Arctic.

The ministry in a statement on Wednesday said Zinichev died while attempting to save a cameraman’s life during training exercises in the Arctic city of Norilsk.

“We regret to inform you that Zinichev tragically died while performing official duties saving someone’s life during interdepartmental exercises to protect the Arctic zone from emergencies in Norilsk,” the ministry said in a message carried by news agencies.

According to Margarita Simonyan; chief editor of the state-funded RT news broadcaster, he said, Zinichev and the cameraman stood at the edge of a ledge.

‘The cameraman slipped and fell into the water.

‘There were many eyewitnesses – no-one even had time to figure out what had happened, as Zinichev rushed into the water after a man who had fallen off and crashed against a protruding rock,” Simonyan tweeted without indicating whether the cameraman was an RT employee.

The army general who had been tipped as a possible successor to Vladimir Putin had headed the Emergency Situations Ministry since 2018 following President Vladimir Putin’s re-election.

He began his career as a KGB officer in the late 1980s and continued to serve in the Federal Security Service (FSB) in the post-Soviet period.

According to the RBC news website, Zinichev was part of Putin’s personal security detail and his “aide-de-camp” from 2006-2015.

The Kremlin said that Putin who is also on a trip to Siberia has been informed of Zinichev’s death.

At the time of his death, Zinichev was 55years old. May his soul rest in peace.
