Sylvester: Group Gives Government Seven Days To Withdraw Dowen College’s Registration

On Wednesday, a group of Concerned Citizens demonstrated outside Dowen College in Lekki, Lagos, where Sylvester Oromoni, 12, was allegedly beaten by schoolmates.

The group also called on the Lagos State Government to withdraw the school’s registration without delay, according to a video of the protest that our correspondent watched on BBC News Pidgin.

A group member, a woman who did not want to be recognized, also criticized the state government’s and officials’ attitudes toward some issues, particularly the protection of pupils in public and private schools.

They also demanded the arrest of the school’s owners, managers, security guards, housekeepers, and others who permitted some of the indicted pupils to depart without being handed over to the proper authorities for inquiry.

They have thus warned Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and the Commissioner for Education, Mrs. Folashade Adefisayo, that unless their demands are granted within seven days, they will lay siege to the school premises.

They also denounced the events that allegedly led to the tragedy in Ojodu, Lagos, on Tuesday afternoon, in which a truck crushed some pupils to death.

Before ramming into the youngsters, the truck driver was supposedly being pursued by traffic cops for breaking several rules.

Security agencies and traffic officers, they argue, should find sensible and civil methods of apprehending errant motorists rather than chasing them all over town, endangering people’s lives.

They demanded that the government track down the perpetrators and bring them to justice.

Meanwhile, Adefisayo told our correspondent on Wednesday morning that only the police could provide a precise figure for the number of people killed in the Tuesday tragedy.

She said, “The matter is being investigated by the police and it is then that we can say how many people were involved. The state government is taking care of the treatment of those injured.”

When asked if state officials will visit the school to meet with the remaining kids and employees, the Commissioner responded that counselors had been dispatched to speak with victims’ family and others.

“A lot of companies have chosen to downsize, and maybe that was the right thing for them. We chose a different path. Our belief was that if we kept putting great products in front of customers, they would continue to open their wallets.”
