Take Nothing For The Journey

Take Nothing For The Journey

When you make a journey do you travel with heavy luggage, light, or with nothing at all? Very often, when we look into our luggage and discover that the spare clothes, we did not wear and spare objects we never used, do we resolve to do better next time? In today’s gospel, Jesus told his disciples to take nothing with them. Nothing at all! Possessions tend to possess us.

There are few lessons here that are of great importance;

1. Jesus is training his disciples that in their mission, they were to depend on God for everything. God will take care of their needs both physically and spiritually.

2. They should not spend their time or effort worrying about the things to carry not even a staff but be available. God will supply the graces necessary to cross the hurdles of life.

3. Our Lord also expects the recipients of the message to exhibit generosity in feeding and accommodating the disciples.

4. If we depend on physical possession or any other kind of mental luggage like a high opinion of our good looks, or reliance on our talents, then our ears become deafen to God’s call, and our hearts hardened against it.

It means, therefore, that we must put our trust in God alone for only God is our Saviour and salvation. (Ps. 1)He is the all-sufficient God.

The Vatican Council II document, Gaudium et Spes, asserts the gift of self and the promotion of peace in the world. This is a task, we are called to carry out so that the joy and hope of the gospel amid a broken world.

Pope Francis also mentioned in his message on the FOURTH WORLD DAY OF THE POOR,
15 November 2020 that;

“In everything you do, remember your end” (Sir 7:36). These are the final words of this chapter of the book of Sirach. They can be understood in two ways. First, our lives will sooner or later come to an end. Remembering our common destiny can help lead to a life of concern for those poorer than ourselves or lacking the opportunities that were ours. But second, there is also an end or goal towards which each of us is tending. And this means that our lives are a project and a process. The “end” of all our actions can only be love. This is the ultimate goal of our journey, and nothing should distract us from it. This love is one of sharing, dedication and service, born of the realization that we were first loved and awakened to love.

May God make us rich in the things of heaven and give us a generous heart that we may freely share with others the spiritual and material treasures He has given to us. Amen.

Today's Quote

“Here’s to the crazy ones. The misfits. The rebels. The troublemakers. The round pegs in the square holes. The ones who see things differently. They’re not fond of rules. And they have no respect for the status quo. You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them. About the only thing you can’t do is ignore them. Because they change things. They push the human race forward. And while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius. Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones who do.”
