Usyk Beats Anthony Joshua In Rematch To Retain Unified WBO, WBO And IBF Titles

Oleksandr Usyk of Ukraine secured his place at the top of the heavyweight division with a rematch victory against British-Nigerian boxer Anthony Joshua on Saturday night, August 20, at the King Abdullah Sports City Arena in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

He outpointed Joshua throughout the course of 12 rounds, prevailing on a split decision with scores of 116-112 and 115-113 on two cards. The third judge gave Joshua a score of 115-113.

During the battle, Joshua displayed a different side of himself, applying a lot of pressure and landing body blows on Usyk, which was a huge improvement over their first encounter in September.

In the ninth round, the body punches nearly shattered Usyk (who helped protect Ukraine during Russia’s invasion).

Usyk then showcased outstanding character in the tenth round, nailing Joshua with huge counterpunches to finish the bout.

Usyk deservedly won and could face WBC heavyweight champion, Tyson Fury, in December for the title of undisputed heavyweight champion of the world.

Usyk said after the fight, through a translator, “This is already history. Many generations are going to watch this fight, especially the [10th] round when someone tried to beat me hard, but I standed it and turned it in a different way. Thanks, God.”

Usyk was asked if he felt he won the fight despite the protests from Joshua’s corner. “Of course, Yes” he replied.

Usyk reacts when questioned about the only major heavyweight title he does not currently hold: the WBC belt held by Tyson Fury.

He said, “I’m sure that Tyson Fury is not retired yet. I’m sure. I’m convinced he wants to fight me. I want to fight him. And if I’m not fighting Tyson Fury, I’m not fighting at all.”

“Only God knows whether I will or not. But all these gentlemen here around me, my team, they’re going to help me.”
