Actress Laide Bakare Talks About Her Experience With Extortion And Harassment By The Police

Published on

The unprofessional act of brutalizing and extorting individuals by the Nigerian police has alarmed Yoruba movie star Laide Bakare.

On Sunday, she posted a story on her Instagram page about how she was attacked by police on Saturday when she was driving in Lagos state’s Ikorodu Expressway.

Laide wrote; “For the first time, I experienced the brutal way Nigerians are being treated along that axis. I cannot imagine how someone with a brain and sanity will drive someone’s car away with a minor in it.

“A lot is happening in this country that needs to be attended to. My daughter was left terrified because of the incident.

“The police targeted only big cars and vulnerable people to exploit and rob. Just because they needed our ATM card to take out N70,000”.

Reacting to the allegation in a post on X, the Spokesperson for the Police command, SP Benjamin Hundeyin stated that Laide Bakare was stopped for violating traffic laws but chose to create a scene.

“You were stopped for contravening traffic laws by driving on the BRT lane.

“You chose to create a scene. You chose to remain out of your vehicle when it was being taken to the LAMATA office.

“And the officers were not going to succumb to your gimmick to hold them down at that spot.

“You paid the N70,000 fine for your offence into the government coffers. Not a finger was laid on you. You left with the receipt and your vehicle.”

The truth is some in the police force, who have been entrusted with protecting lives and property, have abused their power.
