Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, the former Vice President of Nigeria, has been named the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) Presidential candidate for the 2023 general election.
Atiku won the highly desired presidential ticket during the main opposition party’s presidential primaries on Saturday in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital.
He received 371 votes, defeating his closest rival, Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State, who received 237 votes. Bukola Saraki, the former Senate President, came in third with 70 votes.
Following his victory, Atiku wrote on Twitter, “Today, the battle to rebuild and unite our great country moves forward. I’m honoured to be named the @OfficialPDPNig candidate. I look forward to speaking with Nigerians across the country, taking the message of hope and unity as we build one future for one people, -AA #OneNigeria.”
