The Lagos State Government has closed 13 markets throughout the state due to ongoing infractions including unlawful trash disposal in an attempt to protect public health and maintain environmental cleanliness.
In a message posted on his X Twitter on Friday, Tokunbo Wahab, the state’s Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, revealed this.
According to Wahab, the enforcement measures are consistent with the Lagos State Environmental Management and Protection Law of 2017, which aims to uphold public order and ensure responsible trash management.
Notably, persistent infractions, such as the inappropriate disposal of rubbish on roads, medians, and highways, led to the closure of Ketu and Mile 12 markets Friday night.
These actions have been deemed necessary to restore cleanliness and public safety in these busy commercial areas, according to Wahab.
The Lagos State government emphasized that market stakeholders must take full responsibility for proper waste management going forward to avoid further disruptions.
Wahab stated, “These enforcement actions are necessary to safeguard public health and restore order to our public spaces.”
