A 39-year-old woman has been detained after being found with human tissue in Mpumalanga, South Africa.

Mpumalanga police spokesperson, Brigadier Donald Mdhluli, in a statement on Thursday, September 18, stated that Rose Mnisi, employed at a local hospital, was apprehended after authorities received a tip about a woman selling placentas (an organ formed during pregnancy that links mother and baby).

“The police officers followed up on the information and, based on the suspect’s description, were able to locate a woman carrying a plastic bag along Voortrekker Street in Lydenburg.

“Upon being approached by the police, the woman was found to be in possession of human tissue. The woman confirmed that she is a cleaner in the maternity ward,” Mdhluli said.

Mnisi was arrested and charged with the unlawful possession of human tissue.

She has since appeared in the Mashishing District Court, and the case has been adjourned to September 25 for her bail application.
