Italy is thrown into mourning after the Italian ambassador to Australia fell to her death from a balcony in the town of Forigno, north of Rome.

Diplomat Francesca Tardioli was found dead outside a house in Foligno, north of Rome on Sunday, Italian media has reported.

Local authorities are investigating her death.

Italian media reports she lost her balance while looking over a balcony.

Australia’s ambassador to Italy, Margaret Twomey, paid tribute to Ms. Tardioli on social media and mourned her loss.

“Heartbreaking news on the passing of Ambassador Francesca Tardioli. Dear friend. Brilliant colleague. Greatly respected diplomat,” she tweeted.

Ms. Tardioli was a great asset for Australia, Ms. Twomey said.

The Italian embassy also tweeted about the death of Ms. Tardioli, describing her as “an exquisite person, professional model, and promoter of human rights”.

She had held the position of the Italian ambassador to Canberra since 2019.
