Former Minneapolis Police officer; Derek Chauvin’s request for a new trial in George Floyd’s death has been rejected by the Judge presiding over the case.
According to AP news, Judge Peter Cahill denied the request on Friday, saying defense attorney Eric Nelson has not shown that abused its discretion and denied Chauvin the right to a fair trial.
Recall that the 45-years-old former police officer pinned Floyd to the ground on Minneapolis street for about 9 1/2 minutes on May 25, 2020, while the deceased cried and pleaded that he couldn’t breathe which Chauvin ignored. He didn’t even listen to the shouts of onlookers. One of the bystanders got the incident on camera and this went viral leading to global outrage and a reckoning on racial disparities in America.

Chauvin was convicted of second-degree unintentional murder and other charges in Floyd’s death on May 25, 2020, and he faces a practical maximum of 30 years when he’s sentenced Friday afternoon.
Chauvin‘s case may come to an end today. He faces decades in prison, with several legal experts predicting a sentence of 20 to 25 years but prosecutors are seeking a 30-year sentence.
