More secrets have been exposed in the trial of a 36-year-old lawyer named Abasiesebanga Ikoiwak and five other defendants for the brutal killing of her 41-year-old husband, Godwin Ikoiwak.

Ikoiwak, a native of the Eket Local Government Area, worked as a Counsel at the State Ministry of Justice until his passing in January of last year.

A friend and former classmate of the deceased from the University of Calabar’s Faculty of Law, Sunny Anyanwu, testified at the hearing of the case before a Uyo High Court that he told Sunny Anyanwu by phone a few days prior to his passing that he and his lawyer wife, Abasiesebanga Ikoiwak, were having problems due to infidelity.

According to him, the deceased implied that he had brought the situation to the attention of his wife’s family, who had then called him to a meeting in their home in Nung Udoe Itak, Ikono Local Government Area.

He claimed that although his companion attended the rendezvous, he did not survive the journey.

Anyanwu, the seventh prosecution witness, also said that the deceased informed him that his wife was having a sexual connection with a lawyer who was her former boss.

He claimed the deceased friend had revealed to him that his wife had worked as a housekeeper for a Catholic priest named Fr. Maurice Mbeke, who later got her pregnant. They had a kid together who was now 19 years old and was named after the deceased husband’s maternal grandfather.

The prosecution witness testified that the late Ikoiwak was unaware that the boy who had been residing in his home for years was actually his wife’s son since she had claimed the child was her younger sibling.

He claimed that the deceased told him that despite his wife’s repeated claims of being pregnant, he never sees her pregnant before the kid is delivered and presented to him with the words “This is your child.”

The audio recordings of the phone conversation between the witness and his deceased buddy were offered as exhibit in court, by the prosecution team, which was led by State Director of Public Prosecution Joseph Umoren.

Abasiesebanga Ikoiwak, the deceased man’s wife, is on trial alongside her mother Margaret Patrick Umoh, 66, her brother Owoidoho Patrick Umoh, 51, a Catholic priest named Fr. Gabriel Ekong, and a physician named Dr. Isaac Njoku for allegedly fabricating the cause of death of Godwin Ikoiwak.

The case which was presided over by Justice Bassey Nkanang, was postponed so that the hearing may continue.

We will bring you more updates as the matter unfolds.
