According to police and emergency personnel, British singer Liam Payne, who was a member of the popular boy band One Direction, died Wednesday at the age of 31 after falling from the third storey of a hotel in Buenos Aires.

It was unclear at first if Payne, who has openly discussed his battles with alcohol problems, was intoxicated or if the fall was an accident. Distressed fans, the most of whom were in their 20s and 30s, and bystanders flocked close to the scene in the Argentine capital, where medical personnel were working, minutes after the news of his death broke.

“The news hit me hard,” fan Pilar Bilik, 27, said outside the hotel.

“So upsetting to hear the news of @LiamPayne passing. Sending love and condolences to his family & loved ones. RIP my friend,” reality star and businesswoman; Paris Hilton wrote on social media with a crying emoji.

A police statement announced that “Liam James Payne, composer and guitarist, former member of the band One Direction, died today after falling from the third floor of a hotel.”

The singer had suffered “very serious injuries incompatible with life as a result of his fall,” the head of the city’s SAME emergency medical service, Alberto Crescenti, told local television, adding “there was no possibility of resuscitation.”

Crescenti said emergency personnel rushed to the Casa Sur hotel in the city’s Palermo neighborhood after an emergency call was made at 5:04pm local time (10.04pm SAST).

They arrived seven minutes later and “verified the death of this man, who we later learnt was a singer.”

According to Crescenti, Payne fell “about 13 or 14 meters” (about 43–46 feet), and it looked like he broke the base of his skull. There have been reports of a disturbance. According to a police statement, the call was made in reference to “an aggressive man who may be under the influence of drugs or alcohol.”

According to the Argentine newspaper, a hotel manager had called in an emergency because a guest was “on drugs and destroying the room.” The operator was informed by the manager that the visitor “has a balcony, and we are afraid they might do something to put their life at risk.” According to a statement from the Buenos Aires security ministry, the hotel management reported “the death of a man who had jumped from the balcony of his room.”

Photos of what appeared to be Payne’s room were published by the Clarin newspaper. They showed a television with a cracked screen, white powder on a table beside a piece of aluminum foil and a lighter. As spectators sobbed and applauded solemnly, a firetruck pulled a body from the hotel at around 8:30 p.m. local time.

May his soul rest in peace, Amen.
