Passwell Chiwaura, 21, was convicted of murdering his friend, Takudzwa Kavhuru, during a disagreement over a prostitute at Matomati bar.

The incident happened after Kavhuru allegedly grabbed the b*tt of a companion Chiwaura had hired for the night.

After a year of pretrial confinement, the High Court’s Justice Munamato Mutevedzi convicted Chiwaura guilty of murder. The sentence date has yet to be determined.

According to H-Metro, the altercation occurred last year as Chiwaura, Kavhuru, and two prostitutes, Joyce Gwese and Patience Gezi, were drinking at the pub. The situation worsened when Kavhuru touched Gezi, whom Chiwaura had recruited.

Gwese reprimanded Kavhuru, prompting a dispute between him and Chiwaura. According to the prosecution, Chiwaura overheard the conversation and challenged Kavhuru, resulting in a fight. During the struggle, Chiwaura used a broken beer bottle to stab Kavhuru in the stomach, resulting in fatal injuries. Kavhuru was transported to a neighboring hospital with his intestines exposed, but died from his injuries upon arrival.

During the trial, Chiwaura denied wanting to kill Kavhuru, citing self-defense. He said that he confused his companion for an assailant during a supposed gang threat. However, Justice Mutevedzi rejected the argument.

“It is for the same reason that this aspect of the accused’s defence remained tepid. It was not seriously argued. We dismiss it like we dismissed the accused’s argument of self-defence,” said Justice Mutevedzi.

The court found that the State had shown beyond a reasonable doubt that Chiwaura was guilty of murder. Chiwaura has been in detention for 14 months and will be sentenced at a later date, with the court expected to consider the gravity of the offense.

A Gentle Reminder: Every obstacle is a stepping stone, every morning; a chance to go again, and those little steps take you closer to your dream.
