A disagreement over beer turned deadly in Mhondoro Ngezi, Zimbabwe, on 27 June 2025, when a man was fatally stabbed near Nyika Secondary School Grounds.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) verified the death of Mugove Katsande and the arrest of 37-year-old Tinashe Chamunorwa in relation to the incident.
According to authorities, the conflict started when Chamunorwa allegedly took Katsande’s beer and poured it onto the ground, triggering a violent clash. In a statement shared on X, formerly Twitter, the ZRP declared, “The ZRP confirms the arrest of Tinashe Chamunorwa (37) in connection with a case of murder which occurred on 27/06/25 near Nyika Secondary School Grounds, Mhondoro Ngezi in which Mugove Katsande died.”
Police further noted, “The suspect allegedly stabbed the victim with a Columbia knife on the chest following a misunderstanding which rose after the suspect snatched the victim’s beer and poured it on the ground.”
The confrontation reportedly occurred in plain sight of onlookers, some of whom were shocked by the rapid escalation. A local resident, who preferred to remain anonymous, mentioned that the two men had been drinking together before the dispute became violent.
Katsande collapsed immediately following the stabbing and was declared dead shortly thereafter.
While Chamunorwa is in custody, authorities are currently seeking a second suspect. “Meanwhile, the ZRP is appealing for information which may lead to the arrest of Vengai Chihiya who is being sought in connection with this case,” police stated.
They encouraged the public to provide any relevant information. “Anyone with information to report at any nearest Police Station,” the statement read.
Although police did not specify the value of the beer involved, alcohol in Zimbabwe typically costs around USD1.00 per bottle.
