Ali Abubakar, who was hauled by his wife Ajinomo Ohunenene-Ummi to a Kaduna Shari’a court on Wednesday, failed to appear because he had no transport fare.
Abubakar had informed the court messenger Tajuddeen Saidu that he would not be able to attend the hearing because he lacked fare to pay for transportation from Abuja to Kaduna. He asked the court to proceed with the case and grant the petitioner’s requests.
Earlier, the petitioner indicated through her attorney Nafisa Ibrahim that she wanted to leave the marriage and was prepared to pay the N50,500 dowry her husband had paid.
Additionally, she requested that the defendant give her N20,000 per month in feeding assistance and that the court grant her custody of their one-year-old baby.
Malam Abdulrahman Isiyaku, the judge, commanded the court messenger and the petitioner to give Abubakar a call so he could address the allegations.
The complainant could utilize the N50,500 dowry as a monthly feeding allowance for their child for five months, according to Abubakar, he added.
The complainant responded in the affirmative when the court inquired if she approved of the sum. Isiyaku ended the marriage through Khul’i (redemption) and mandated that the petitioner preserve the N50,500 intended for the dowry return in order to support her child for five months.
The court ordered Abubakar to continue to look after the child’s health, clothes, and education until she is old enough to attend school.
