Motherhood: Raising A Godly Child In An Ungodly World 7

Published on

Hello, Great Mothers!

Being Godly entails respect for God, our Creator, and Sustainer, as well as consciously obeying His commandments. It entails growing in one’s knowledge of God, believing in Him, honoring Him, and loving Him; submitting to His will in humility; being grateful to Him; and relying on Him.

Knowledge of the truth and humble faith in God and His Word leads to godliness (Titus 1:1-3).

In previous articles, we discussed that raising a Godly child entails nurturing the image and likeness of God in man, i.e. God’s nature in man. Also, these natures were described. How do we nurture God’s image in our children? We do this by

1)Training our children
This entails applying biblical, and Godly parenting principles. This act is not automatic, it involves repetition, reinforcement, and encouragement, sometimes over and over again. We train our children in:

i) Character, and ii) the things of God

i) Training in character
According to a psychologist, training a child in character begins from age 0 to 8. At this age, our children take in what we do, and say. They begin to form their character from what they see us do and hear us say. So, we are their first role models. This means that they develop their behavior from what we teach them.

For instance; we can start training our 2 to 3-year-old child to take his/her plate to the kitchen after eating. If we think they are too small for that, and we do not train them to start taking their plate to the kitchen by themselves after eating, they may never learn it. They will grow up living their plate on the dining table after eating…This is when we teach them to be polite, respectful, and humble.

The home is the first school of every child, and we are their teachers. It is the primary training environment. As mothers, we have the duty of taking our children from 0% to 100% responsibility for their lives… The home is the ideal place for the children to learn to get along with others, learn to work, do housework, social skills, have manners, good attitudes, etc.

From home, we model moral/immoral behavior by our attitudes, thereby giving our children the opportunity to develop their behavior based on what they see and hear.
