Nigerian gospel singer Nathaniel Bassey prayed for Argentina captain Lionel Messi to lift the World Cup.

Nathaniel Bassey shared a photo of Messi on his Twitter account on Tuesday to offer his prayers.

In his tweet, he stated, “Father, Please give Him the World Cup and silence His mockers.

Stating the reason for his prayers, he said “So because I want my favorite player to win the World Cup, I don’t pray for Nigeria Abi? Schm.

Is it today you found out I’m a huge Messi fan? So being a man of God means I can’t watch football as one of my hobbies.”

The act has since sparked reactions from his followers on social media with many of them crucifying him.

One Oberon wrote “You won’t pray for Nigeria to be better it’s for World Cup , what a country , Argentina was a nation that indirectly killed all black people in their nation just to make sure their is no black in their race . Black man is a problem for himself”

One Ugo wrote “Others no sabi God..? Or are not God’s favourite..? Mtchewwww”

One Dammy wrote “You’re a Nigerian living in Nigeria, with all the situations happening in Nigeria, you decide to waste your prayers on Lionel Messi and Argentina? Okay ooo…”

One Ufo wrote “This is a show of how unpatriotic black Africans can be you continent is at the edge of breaking all records and your are seriously routing for someone who has broken all records in football…after we wonder why things don’t work in black nations.”
