Nigeria’s Flamingos have defeated Germany to win a consoling bronze medal at the FIFA U-17 World Cup in India.
Following a thrilling 3-3 draw in regulation time in the third-place match on Sunday, October 30, the Nigerian women defeated Germany 3-2 on penalties at the DY Patil Stadium.
The Flamingos got off to a strong start, scoring three goals before Germany came from behind to force a comeback.
The first goal was scored by Opeyemi Ajakaye in the 20th minute, and the second was scored by Aminat Bello in the 48th. Germany scored three goals in response to Etim Edidiong’s third goal in the 63rd minute to force extra time and penalties.
The Flamingos won the U-17 Women’s World Cup bronze medal after prevailing 3-2 in the penalty shootout to become the second African team to do so.
