A confrontation between personnel of the Nigeria Police Force and their counterparts from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) led to the de@th of one police officer in Amaeze community, located in Ivo Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.
Addressing newsmen, the Chairman of Ivo LGA, Chief Aja Emmanuel, confirmed receiving a report from the Divisional Police Office about a skirmish between police and NSCDC officers, during which one policeman was fatally shot.
“The DPO informed me that there was a clash involving the police and civil defence officers in Amaeze community, and unfortunately, one police officer lost his life in the process, though I am yet to get the full details of the incident,” Ajah said.
According to eyewitnesses in Amaeze community, the deceased policeman, known only as Shedrack, was allegedly shot by mistake by his own colleagues, as reported by Guardian.
A source explained that the incident began when three Hilux vans carrying approximately 30 policemen reportedly intercepted and fired upon an NSCDC van transporting mining equipment to a site in Amaeze, resulting in the k!lling of the police officer.
“In the course of the fracas, Shedrack allegedly attempted to disarm a civil defence officer. But when other policemen tried to shoot at the NSCDC operative, they mistakenly hit their colleague, who di£d on the spot, while some others sustained gunshot injuries,” the source said.
The body of the deceased police officer has reportedly been taken to the morgue, while those who were injured were quickly transported to a nearby hospital for medical treatment.
