The one million-man march organized by the thronging supporters of the Labour Party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, severely overshadowed the 62nd Independence Day celebration in Asaba, Delta State, on Saturday.
The intimidating crowd continued to grow as they forcibly shut down the state capital for more than six hours after marching from the inter-bus roundabout along Nnebisi road in Asaba.
The youths in the city appeared from various towns in the Delta North Local Government Area as early as 7 am to participate in the one million-man march in Asaba.
During the march, a few of Obi’s followers often referred to as “Obedients,” spoke to the Daily Post.
One of them, who goes by the name James Iwenna, claimed that what they saw was more than a million-march.
He said, “We are having one-million-march in solidarity with Peter Obi but what we saw today is no longer one million. You see that the crowd here is about two million.
“Before now, we had to choose between two evils. But as it is now, we have Peter Obi over the two evils. In 2023, we the youths will massively vote for Obi,” the supporter said.
In order to ensure that their efforts don’t turn out useless, Mr James urged his fellow supporters to make sure they collect their PVCs in Asaba in the hopes that the one-million-march would result in victory.
Meanwhile, only a few hundred people attended Governor Ifeanyi Okowa’s Independence Day address in Asaba.
Okowa, who was represented by his deputy, Kingsley Otuaro, urged the populace not to forget the sacrifices made by their leaders who battled for freedom and said that October 1960 will always be a noteworthy day in the lives of Nigerians.
