A 37-year-old mother has been jailed in Alabama, USA, for reportedly watching her 10-year-old daughter overdose on pills while she didn’t take any of them, as part of a suicide pact.
Months after going on the run after the July 2024 incident at a Minnesota motel, Brittney Leigh Hensley was taken into custody.
According to the Sun Herald, the mother and her daughter had been staying at the Studio 6 motel for an extended stay on July 6 when police were called at approximately 6 p.m. on the day of the event due to a youngster who was not responding. According to the publication, the girl was discovered comatose by the time police arrived.
When the youngster regained consciousness, she told authorities about the suicide agreement her mother had made with her after paramedics took her to a nearby hospital for treatment, according to police spokesperson Chief Ryan Lemaire, who talked to the US-based outlet.
“She had this suicide pact with her daughter, and the daughter took the pills, but she didn’t. So, the momma started freaking out when her daughter wouldn’t wake up,” Lemaire was quoted as saying.
It was further stated that Hensley left the region before she could meet with Child Protection Services representatives and police investigators to discuss the criminal charges. Because Hensley had family in Alabama, police feared she might have traveled there.
Three months later, on October 15, she was taken into custody, and she was just transported to Mississippi to face allegations of child abuse.
She appeared in court on Wednesday, the publication reported, and a bail of $500,000 was issued.
