President Buhari condemned the “vicious and senseless” killing of Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) member Omobolanle Raheem on Christmas Day by a police officer on duty.

In a statement released by media adviser Garba Sheff, the president said he was deeply shocked and saddened to learn of the brutal killings and called for “the toughest measures” to be taken against those already in custody.

Garba said President Buhari said the incident was a stark reminder of the recurring threat of gun abuse and urged law enforcement agencies, including the police, to respond to the gun handling reforms introduced by the government and the Department of Protection. It said it was a wake-up call to ensure full implementation of civil rights.

“In this time of grief, the country stands in solidarity with the grieving families and the NBA to ensure that justice is done in this case,” the president said. On December 25, 2022, in Ajah, Lagos State, the late Bolanle, who was seven months pregnant, was shot dead by police while she was in her car with her husband, only child, sister’s child, and sister.
