Russia have declared that two British ‘diplomats’ are being expelled due to suspicions of their involvement in espionage operations.
The Federal Security Service (FSB) disclosed that the second secretary of the British embassy in Moscow, along with the spouse of another British diplomat, have had their accreditation revoked in Russia.
The statement alleged that these diplomats submitted misleading details about their identities and highlighted supposed proof of their engagement in intelligence and secretive tasks.
According to the FSB, ‘counterintelligence work had revealed an undeclared British intelligence presence under the cover of the national embassy.’
State news agencies reported that they were charged with ‘intelligence and subversive activities that threaten Russia’s security.’
The FSB further noted that they ‘intentionally provided false information when receiving permission to enter our country, thereby violating Russian law.’
Both individuals were instructed to depart from Russia within a two-week period.
‘Russia’s FSB will continue working to combat the reconnaissance and disruptive activities of foreign intelligence agencies by all available means,’ the announcement concludes.
This development follows closely on the heels of Russia’s pledge to retaliate after a Russian diplomat was expelled from London just days ago.
