Seven students were injured when a suspected improvised explosive device (IED) detonated at a primary school in Ukum Local Government Area of Benue State.
Security analyst Zagazola Makama confirmed from sources on Friday that the incident took place on September 16, 2025, at approximately 2:00 p.m. at the Local Government Education Authority Primary School, Ater Ayange.
He explained that the explosion occurred when some pupils discovered an object on the school premises and started playing with it, unaware that it was an explosive device.
“While playing, the pin of the device was pulled off, causing an explosion that injured seven children,” he said.
The injured children were quickly taken to St. Anthony Hospital, Zaki-Biam, where they were receiving medical care and showing positive signs of recovery.
He noted that the incident was not reported to the police until September 18, when the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) Ukum was informed and sent a patrol team to the school and hospital.
The Officer-in-Charge of the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit had been dispatched to search the area for any additional hidden explosive devices and to assess the nature of the device involved.
The police also stated that the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) had begun investigating the incident.
