Following the arrest of a 62-year-old man for allegedly feeding poisoned pies to three members of his family, including his own son, police in the province of North West, South Africa, have discovered an insurance fraud-related homicide.
The three fatalities happened over the course of three years after the accused Daniel Mokwai gave them poisoned pies.
According to the authorities, the first belief was that the three dead, including his son, 31, had died naturally.
Mokwai filed insurance claims on all three of the deceased, according to Colonel Adéle Myburgh, a spokesman for the North West police. According to her, the three deceased people’s bodies were dug up, and pathology examinations revealed they had been poisoned, which prompted murder investigations.
The first event happened on Saturday, December 5, 2020; the sixteen-year-old boy died after consuming the pie that was offered to him. He was the accused’s wife’s relative. He passed away around noon near Bloemhof, halfway between Phuduhudu and Gopane.
Another relative of the accused’s wife passed away unexpectedly in the night in Boitumelong township, outside of Bloemhof, on December 1, 2021, one year later. The sixteen-year-old child also fainted after consuming a pie that the defendant had bought.
The third case concerned Mothibi Alpheos Mokwai, 31, the son of the accused, who passed away on Sunday, October 9, 2022, at his home on Matthysse Street, Bloemhof, after consuming a pie.
After being taken into custody on Monday, Mokwai showed up at the Bloemhof Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday. He was accused of three killings.
He was placed under remand until Wednesday, September 4, by the court. The delay was necessary so that he could obtain legal counsel.
“In all three cases, the accused successfully claimed from his insurance policies. However, family members reported him to the police after becoming suspicious that he murdered their relatives by allegedly buying all three of them pies. They would then get sick after eating the pie and eventually died,” said Myburgh.
