Sudden US Aid Withdrawal Endangers Millions Of Lives – UNAIDS

Published on

The Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS, known as UNAIDS, declared on Monday, March 24 that the abrupt cessation of US foreign aid funding has had a catastrophic effect.

In a formal statement, Winnie Byanyima, the Executive Director of UNAIDS, who highlighted this issue, cautioned that without increased financial support, millions more individuals will perish and the worldwide AIDS crisis will intensify once again.

The United States has traditionally been the globe’s most significant contributor of humanitarian aid, yet US President Donald Trump has drastically reduced international assistance since resuming his presidency on January 20.

“It is reasonable for the United States to want to reduce its over time, but the sudden withdrawal of life-saving support is having a devastating impact. We urge for a reconsideration and an urgent restoration of services, life-saving services,” Byanyima expressed to journalists in Geneva, the capital city of Switzerland.

According to her assessment, without additional resources, an extra 6.3 million deaths related to AIDS will occur over the next four years.

She elaborated that based on the most recent data from 2023, approximately 600,000 AIDS-related fatalities were recorded worldwide, noting that the organization anticipates an additional 8.7 million new infections.

“So you’re talking of a 10-fold increase. You’re talking of losing the gains that we have made over the last 25 years. It is very serious,” she further emphasized.

A Gentle Reminder: Every obstacle is a stepping stone, every morning; a chance to go again, and those little steps take you closer to your dream.
