John Mikel Obi, the former captain of the Super Eagles, remains optimistic about the Nigerian national team’s chances of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, despite their current position in the qualification group.
The Super Eagles are gearing up for a pivotal final phase in their qualification journey. They are set to take on the Crocodiles of Lesotho this Friday in a Matchday 9 clash at the New Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane. After that, they will conclude the campaign next Tuesday with an away match against the Cheetahs of Benin Republic.
At present, the West African team holds third place in Group C, having earned 11 points from eight matches. Nigeria needs to triumph in their final two games to have a genuine shot at qualifying for the global competition.
Speaking on the ObiOne Podcast, Mikel emphasized the seriousness of the situation, declaring that failing to qualify would be unacceptable for the football-passionate nation.
“It’s going to be a crime, an absolute crime, if Nigeria doesn’t make it to the World Cup again,” Mikel said. “We love our football too much. Our World Cup fate is in the players’ hands. They have to win these two games—no excuses.”
Mikel also urged the players to set aside any external distractions and concentrate entirely on achieving the results needed for the nation.
“At this stage, every off-field problem goes out the window. It’s about the players now,” he added. “They must take responsibility and deliver. Nigerians are counting on them.”
The former midfielder’s message is unmistakable: the Super Eagles must battle fiercely to achieve positive outcomes in their last two qualification matches.
A Gentle Reminder: Every obstacle is a stepping stone, every morning; a chance to go again, and those little steps take you closer to your dream.
