International retail giant; Tesco online grocery store said that their website and app have been hit by hackers.

The supermarket chain initially released a statement acknowledging that it was facing a “major disruption” following an “attempt to interfere with our system”.

The problems first surfaced on Saturday when customers reported they were unable to place, modify and finalize orders or track active deliveries.

Many are wondering if their pre-paid orders would be delivered, with others asking about refunds for orders they were unable to complete.

In a tweet posted on Saturday, the company said it was working to “get things back up and running.”

As the problems continued on Sunday, a Tesco spokesperson said: “Starting yesterday, we have been experiencing disruption to our online grocery website and app.

“An attempt was made to interfere with our system causing problems with the search function on the site.

“We are working hard to fully restore all services and apologize for the inconvenience.

“There is no reason to believe that this issue affects customer data and we continue to take ongoing action to ensure that all data remains secure.”

It is not yet clear how many customers are affected or whether the problem is nationwide. But as of 1145 GMT, the Tesco website seemed to be working properly.
