THE HIDDEN AND PERFECT TOUCH

Published on

The healing touch of Jesus and our desire to touch him by faith bring the balm of God’s love into the midst of our grief, suffering and pain and gives us renewed life.

Hos. 2:16, 17C-18, 21-22
Matt. 9:18-26

One example of a terrifying parental grief is found in the gospel reading for today. A synagogue official, intercepts Jesus as he was speaking and falls at his feet, begging him saying: “My daughter had just died. Please, come lay your hands on her so that she may get well and live.” Such deep faith made Jesus go immediately with him to care for his daughter whom we later learnt was only 12 years old.

As they were going to the royal official”s house, a woman afflicted with chronic hemorrhaging for twelve years and having exhausted her savings on doctors, came from behind and touched Jesus. Even though she is frightened to take such a step, she dares to touch the tassel of Jesus’ cloak, hoping this renowned healer might bring her relief. And sure He does! The narrative picks up again and ends with Christ taking the little daughter by the hand on a beautiful grace note—with the news spreading throughout that land and beyond.

The stories of anguish and pain and renewed life and healing take us into the heart of our Christian faith.  God embraces us as we are—flawed, vulnerable, in need of rescue and healing.  He is gracious and merciful. The Lord heals the broken hearted and those who are humble He saves. What better way to begin the day remembering that the Lord is gracious and merciful slow to anger and of great kindness. Let us come with confidence, faith and trust. May God grant us the strength and healing to undertake our tasks and good works imitating Him who is all gracious and merciful. Amen.

God bless
