Tinubu Will Remain Unpopular Until His Policies Start Producing Results – Shehu Sani

Shehu Sani, previously a senator for Kaduna Central, stated that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s popularity among Nigerians will remain low until his reforms start producing clear, positive outcomes.

Sani shared these insights during a discussion on Channels Television’s Politics Today, addressing the state of national dialogue and political responsibility.

He commended Tinubu for creating an atmosphere where even individuals from his South West region feel comfortable critiquing his government, calling it a ”shift from the political culture under former President Muhammadu Buhari.’ Sani noted that during Buhari’s presidency, lawmakers and citizens from the president’s region faced expectations to stay quiet on national matters.

“When I stood up in the parliament to speak about the insecurity in the North, I faced serious resistance from senators from the northern part of Nigeria,” Sani said. “You were expected to be quiet and embrace whatever it is because the president came from your region.”

He further explained that under Buhari’s tenure, criticism about issues like insecurity, poverty, or the high number of out-of-school children in the North was often perceived as betrayal rather than a genuine concern for national progress.

In contrast, Sani highlighted that Tinubu is pursuing a politically challenging approach by focusing on long-term reforms rather than short-term approval. “Tinubu is embarking on a project he knows very well he will be unpopular. You either do two things: please people by doing what the people want, or to look at the future of the country where we are heading to and lose some popularity or votes for you to achieve it,” he said.

He concluded that Tinubu’s ”unpopularity” might continue until the public starts witnessing the advantages of his administration’s policies and reforms.

A Gentle Reminder: Every obstacle is a stepping stone, every morning; a chance to go again, and those little steps take you closer to your dream.
