US And EU Near Trade Deal To Impose 15% Tariff On Imports, Including Cars

US and EU are nearing a trade deal imposing 15% tariff on imports, possibly including cars, mirroring the US-Japan framework.

The European Union and the United States are edging closer to a trade agreement that would see a broad 15% tariff applied to EU goods entering the US, two diplomats confirmed on Wednesday.

According to the sources, the proposed tariff structure is expected to mirror a similar framework agreement recently established between the US and Japan. The deal, if finalised, could significantly impact transatlantic trade, particularly for European car manufacturers and other key exporters.

While formal details are yet to be released, diplomats suggest the tariff could cover a wide range of goods and mark a shift in Washington’s approach to trade policy with its European allies. The proposed agreement is still under negotiation, and it remains unclear when it would be signed or implemented.

The potential deal comes amid growing efforts by the Trump administration to harmonise trade rules with major partners while also addressing domestic industry concerns.

Neither the European Commission nor the US Trade Representative’s office has issued an official comment on the matter.
