A Kentucky sheriff has been taken into custody regarding the Thursday, September 20, shooting death of a district judge inside a courthouse.

According to state police, District Judge Kevin Mullins, 54 years, was found to have numerous gunshot wounds and was declared dead at the scene.

State police said that a preliminary investigation revealed that Mullins was shot by Letcher County Sheriff Shawn M. Stines following an altercation within the judge’s chambers.

State police also said that Stines is accused of one count of first-degree murder. CNN is attempting to find out if Stines has hired legal counsel.

“There is far too much violence in this world, and I pray there is a path to a better tomorrow,” Gov. Andy Beshear said in a Facebook post.

Kentucky State Police Trooper Matt Gayheart stated that the incident occurred at the Letcher County courtroom in Whitesburg, Kentucky at a press conference on Thursday night.

No one else was inside the judge’s chambers, despite the fact that other individuals were in the building at the time, and no other injuries were reported.

Following the shooting, Stines turned himself in and was quickly taken into custody on the spot. Gayheart said he is assisting the authorities.

The trooper said that all witnesses will be questioned and that the facility is equipped with cameras.

“This community is small in nature, and we’re all shaken,” Gayheart said about the shooting.

Jackie Steele, the commonwealth’s attorney for the 27th Judicial Circuit, and Kentucky Attorney General Russell Coleman’s office will collaborate on the investigation as special prosecutors, Coleman announced on Thursday.

“We will fully investigate and pursue justice,” Coleman said.
