We Are Capable Of Amazing Things

1 Peter 4:7-11
Luke 5:1-11

In today’s gospel, after a failed all-night fishing expenditure, here the fishermen were filled with amazement at the awesome haul of fish caught at Christ’s command. Think of it: The Lord provided just that many fish on purpose—enough almost to sink the very boats they were fishing from, but not one too many.
Peter in his own account realized that there is more than the catch of fish here. He falls at the feet of Jesus and confesses, “Depart from me, Lord, for I am a sinful man” (Luke 5:8).
Our Lord wants to convince us that He has more to give us than we can possibly gather in, and that it is our nothingness that opens us to receive His gifts. He wants us to realize that through obedience we too can do amazing things like Peter and St. Patrick who became fishers of men. We too can sour to greater heights. We too can be christ’s friends that takes his message of salvation to the ends of the earth. Cast your nets into the sea and you will see the wonders of God.
