RT Hon. Austin Okezie Meregini (Ugolee), the Deputy Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly, has repeatedly clarified that elected mayors and council members serve four-year terms rather than two-year ones in the state’s local government administration.
Speaking about the controversy surrounding a purported two-year term in the bill that is currently being considered by lawmakers, Rt. Hon. Meregini, the official spokesperson for the 8th Assembly and the chairman of the House Committee on Media and Publicity, explained that any reference to a two-year term was an error.
“The fact is that whoever may have seen two years in that bill should know it was an error. I have laid it to rest now by clarifying that the tenure is four years,” he stated emphatically.
The Deputy Speaker further emphasized that Governor Dr. Alex Chioma Otti, OFR, is a leader of integrity who does not engage in altering established standards for political convenience.
“The world should know that Dr. Alex Chioma Otti, OFR, is not the kind of man inclined to altering established standards. The tenure remains four years. This is confirmed and ascertained,” Rt. Hon. Meregini declared.
“I have spoken to some radio stations, and I am using this medium to reinforce that once this bill is passed into law, the tenure will officially be four years, not two,” Rt. Hon. Meregini affirmed.
With this decisive clarification, the Deputy Speaker has put to rest any speculations regarding the tenure of local government officials, reaffirming the Abia State government’s commitment to upholding due legislative processes and ensuring a governance system built on integrity and accountability.
