The Nigerian military is set to try 16 officers who allegedly plotted to overthrow President Bola Tinubu’s government in 2025. The officers, who were arrested in October 2025 for “acts of indiscipline” and “breaches of service regulations,” are now facing court martial for allegedly plotting to topple the government.
The investigation, conducted by the Defence Headquarters, found that some of the officers were involved in the plot, and their actions were “inconsistent with the ethics, values, and professional standards required of members of the Armed Forces of Nigeria”. The officers, who include brigadier generals, colonels, and majors, could face the death penalty if found guilty.
The military had initially denied reports of a coup plot, but has now confirmed that the investigation has been concluded and the report has been forwarded to the appropriate authorities.
