Abia Set to Make History: Para Badminton Championships to Bring Global Spotlight to State

Abia State is gearing up to host two major international para-badminton events, the 1st Abia Para Badminton International Championship and the All-Africa Para Badminton Championships, scheduled to take place from September 30 to October 12, 2025. This marks a significant milestone for Nigeria, becoming the first West African country and third African nation, after Egypt and Kenya, to stage an international badminton tournament.

  • Number of Participants: 368 players from 32 countries are expected to participate in the championships.
  • Tournament Dates: The Abia Para Badminton International will run from September 30 to October 5, while the All-Africa Para Badminton Championships will follow from October 6 to 12.
  • Venue: The newly refurbished International Conference Centre in Umuahia, the state capital, will host the events.
  • State-of-the-Art Facilities: Abia State has invested in world-class facilities, including a high-tech badminton court and custom-built buses designed to transport athletes with disabilities in comfort and safety.
