On Tuesday, March 25, the House of Representatives effectively advanced a collection of constitutional amendment bills during their second reading, which included measures to establish state and local government police forces, as well as to designate specific seats for Persons with Disabilities (PWD) and special interest groups within the legislative framework.
These changes, embedded within a broader set of 39 bills targeting judicial, legislative, and electoral improvements, were endorsed without any discussion. The bills aim to enact substantial alterations to Nigeria’s constitutional structure, such as introducing designated legislative positions for PWDs and other underrepresented communities, alongside the creation of state and local police units.
The suggested reforms have ignited conversations regarding the future of security and political representation across the nation.
The legislation proposing the formation of state and local government police, put forward by representatives from Delta and Ekiti States, would add a fresh dimension of law enforcement at the community level.

Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, who oversaw the plenary meeting, forwarded the bills to the Committee on Review of the Constitution for additional evaluation.
